The famous breed of cows known as the Hereford Cattle scatter the vast fields of Herefordshire, known for their red coats and white faces they make a delightful site in the surrounding towns and villages.

The origin of the cattle has been lost over time, but it is popularly agreed that they were founded from the draught ox and descended from the small red cattle of Roman Briton and from a large Welsh breed which was once found along the border of England and Wales. The Hereford cattle have taken their name from the county of Herefordshire, as they were originally bred in this historic agricultural part of the country.

The early Hereford breeders moulded these cattle with the intention to produce high yields of beef and fast production, and to this day these qualities remain a staple of the breed.

The Hereford’s are know for their large stature, with males weighing up to 1,800 pounds, and females 1,200. They are a muscular, long and tall breed, with a trim smooth coat of dark red and yellow. They are also known for their short think horns that typically curve down the sides of their heads, giving them their distinct look.

Along with their distinct appearance, this breed is known for their vigour and foraging ability, as well as their longevity with many females still producing calves beyond the age of 15 years.
