Let there be light- Tips for lighting up your home

5 minute read.

The lighting in your home should be a detail that you don’t notice, simply because it’s so subtle. If it is noticeable in a negative way – for example, you are struggling to work, read or carry out simple everyday tasks, then your lighting is likely to be incorrect for that particular area of your home.

The lighting in your home should enhance your environment. It should provide ambience and of course it should be aesthetically pleasing too. Your lighting choices should ultimately enhance your spaces and make them feel warm and inviting!

For this to happen you must have a clear idea of what type of lighting is required in each individual room within your home.

What is the purpose of your lighting

If you require lighting in an area where you work, direct lighting is required. Direct lighting is focused within the area you are working so that you are able to see clearly. On the other hand, if you want to simply light up a space, then ambient lighting is required – this is indirect lighting. So, once you recognise which type of lighting you need in each room – and each room is likely to require different lighting depending on its function - then you can begin to determine the correct mood.

Use multiple light sources

Don’t be afraid to use multiple light sources within a single space. For example, in your kitchen add under cupboard spotlights to allow you to carry out worktop tasks in good light and install overhead spotlights for general kitchen activities. In your sitting room, strategically placed floor lamps are perfect for reading whilst you sit in your favourite chair. Meanwhile, bathroom lighting should be shadow and glare free to allow for best use of mirrors.

Consider night lights

It’s especially important to consider the correct lighting in children’s bedrooms. Dimmed night lights not only provide reassurance to young children who may be fearful of the dark but are also useful in helping you reach your child if needed at night. Table lamps with low wattage bulbs will not disturb youngsters and are perfect for this very purpose.

Tips for choosing the perfect lighting for your home

1.  High ceilings can accommodate a chandelier. Low ceilings cannot! You should allow at least seven feet from the floor for a chandelier to hang comfortably.

2. The main source of light in any room should be bright. Use LED lights for brightness and comfort.

3. Add accent lamps in living rooms for evening ambience.

4. A lamp placed at the correct angle on a desk will allow tasks to be completed without annoying shadows.

5. Bedroom lamps should be close to your bed with a dimmer option for convenience.

6. Place a lamp on a side table next to your comfiest chair for use as a reading light.

7. Your light fittings should always complement the theme, style and décor of your home.

8. Children’s bedrooms and playrooms should be bright and welcoming but avoid floor lamps and glass fixtures for safety.

Remember that besides illuminating your home, lighting can have a huge impact on your frame of mind too – so choose carefully and ensure you light up your life, rather than dim your mood.
